This past Sunday, two member of our Lifelong Learning faculty, Deb Cohen, our Kindergarten (Gan Yeladim) teacher, and our Marci Barnes, Lifelong Learning Director, were honored by the Agency for Jewish Learning in two separate but important communal programs.
Deb was recognized as one of the greater Pittsburgh Jewish community’s “Unsung Heroes” for her tremendous dedication to our youngest religious school students. Each Sunday during the school year, Deb has offered a welcoming and warm classroom for these students as they continue their Jewish education after attending our pre-school. Simply, Deb is a magician in the classroom because if you see her students at the beginning of the year and then watch them come the Spring you will be amazed about how confidant and comfortable they already feel about their connection of Judaism and our community. Thank you Deb for all you do for our temple family and for the Jewish people each Sunday!
Also, last Sunday, Marci Barnes, was honored by the AJL for her efforts to enhance our programming for our Special Needs students. Marci with the help of our faculty members, especially Cathy Filson, and dedicated parents, has worked during this past year to ensure that all of students have an opportunity to experience a quality Jewish education. Thank you, Marci for these efforts. And thank you for all that you began to accomplish this past year. Sadly, because of our difficult financial situation, Marci, as you already have learned, will not be with us next year. We will miss you and I know, that I speak for our congregation in wishing you only the best in the coming year.
And this week we will also say thank you to Elliot Frank who has served our community as Executive Director for the past year and a half. Elliot has worn many hats around the temple – treasurer, construction manager, administrator/executive director – and we are grateful for his dedication to the temple. And we wish him well in his future endeavors.
We like many, many small and medium size congregations around the country are facing very real financial difficulties because of the current state of our nation’s economy and our past deficit budgets. Our president, Ralph Karsh, and members of the temple’s executive board, are currently preparing a detailed letter explaining our particular situation. This letter will be forthcoming soon, and I urge you to join us for a Congregational Meeting on Sunday, June 28th at 9:30 AM as we seek to move forward in the coming months towards a more secure fiscal future.
B’shalom,
Rabbi Art Donsky
Everyone knows Rabbi Art plays a mean guitar. Those who attended this year’s Purim Play, Schmaltz...A Greased Purim were treated to a solo that would have made Chuck Berry smile. Check out the video below.
And did you know the entire night’s event is available on DVD? We are selling the DVDs, complete with high quality video editing on professionally-printed discs, for $18 each as a fundraiser to the temple. For more information, contact Ken Eisner or Mike Daninhirsch.
Pittsburgh Area Introduction to Judaism Class
If you enjoy being a part of our Temple community, but were not born Jewish nor converted, this might be a wonderful opportunity for you to explore your relationship with Judaism. If you have begun studying Judaism thinking that this might be the beginning of a journey towards conversion, this might be a wonderful opportunity for you to explore your relationship with Judaism.
This class is for adult learners interested in exploring Judaism. It may be particularly valuable for interfaith couples and those considering conversion or are in the process of conversion. Introduction to Judaism is a hands-on course that teaches beginners about the basics of Jewish history, thought and practice. The class runs 23 weeks and presents a mix of study, discussion and practical experiences designed for all interested in exploring a Jewish life for themselves--interfaith couples and/or non-Jews considering conversion.
Taught by several Reform Rabbis form the Greater Pittsburgh area, Introduction to Judaism could be right for you. Completion of the course is only one part of the journey to Judaism for those who are considering conversion. Please speak with your Rabbi about registration.
Every participant must be sponsored by a local Rabbi.
Classes are held on Thursdays at 7-9 PM at Rodef Shalom Congregation beginning on May 7, 2009 and continuing through October.
Travel plans should not stop you from registering for the class.
A book fee will enable you to begin building a Jewish library that you will use during the class and beyond.
From Marci Barnes, our Director of Lifelong Learning
This past Friday night, my husband and I “had Shabbat” with our 3- year-old son. After he was in bed, we put in a VCR tape of an old favorite movie of ours. From the first notes of the first act, right up until the very end several hours later, Fiddler on the Roof, is still one of our favorite holiday traditions. It was hearing the opening number again, “Tradition”, that made me realize that watching this movie to get a break from all of the crass commercialization of the December holidays has actually become a tradition in my family.
One of the most amazing things that I have discovered since coming to work at Temple Ohav Shalom is how dedicated this congregation is to Judaism and its traditions. A majority of members here come from families with multiple religious backgrounds where parents have intermarried or converted or both. And whether or not you also celebrate other religions at home, week after week and year after year, you come to Temple Ohav Shalom to pray, to learn and to celebrate Judaism.
This Sunday, I invite all of you to join the teachers and students in our school as we celebrate Chanukah beginning at 11am in the Social Hall. (See information below for details.) We will say the blessings for the 1st night, sing songs, play games, share presents, and, of course, eat. Continue a family tradition or start a new one this Chanukah!
Reminder: There will be no school on Tuesday, December 23rd, Sunday, December 28th or Tuesday, December 30th. School resumes on Sunday, January 4, 2009. Our next Family Shabbat Dinner, featuring Kitah Daled, the 4th Grade, is on Friday night, January 9th. This is a different date than was advertised previously this year.
